If you can survive HOT FREAKS today, then get back over near the convention center this evening to the PUREVOLUME.COM HOUSE by midnight as FS has gathered some performers together that should provide the high-energy needed to stay up all night. The dynamic DJ duo of MiCHAEL from LA will be spinning records in the Lounge before midnight, and then at the witching hour, IGLU & HARTLY kick things off. Then from the UK, ENTER SHIKARI will errupt. 2am brings EDWARD SHARPE & THE MAGNETIC ZEROS from Los Angeles, a band people all SXSW have been talking about, and then to close out a week's worth of parties at the PV House, DJ KISSY SELL OUT will play until no one can stand anymore.Motel de Moka - 2009-03-19 09:18:08

note: I don’t know what this night list is about, except I noodle with it for hours back and forth around midnight. That’s why it’s a bit studied, not particularly flowing in sentimental way compared to other midnight list. But at the same time, I suppose some people might find the little too fast pace is enjoyable for night conversation. I’ll do slumbering rhythm in third part. Anyway, it opens with disassembled dub, then snap in various dub tracks. I also looked at archive, this is actually the first time I post a proper dub list instead of simple series of favorite picks. So at least that can be picked apart. Gem in the list: Tommy Guerrero and Quantic. I’ll post longer Bill Laswell works later in series. Also, as you notice posting frequency is about to cliff dive, since almost all of MdM posters will be busy. Maybe its time for open recruit?

Bring Out the Sound System
The West Indian Roots of Hip HopWhen discussing the origins of Hip Hop, most agree that it began in the Bronx. Many also agree that it is an African-American artform with many antecedents. It is a known fact that the trinity of Hip Hop DJ pioneers have roots in the West Indies including DJ Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa, and Grandmaster Flash. Other early artists who made significant contributions to the music include Kool DJ Red Alert, KRS-One, Doug E. Fresh, among others. The sound systems brought out into the parks by Jamaican DJs and the tradition of toasting are among the influences to be debated and discussed.
Post World War II Bronx had a growing community of West Indian immigrants, particularly after the U.S. Immigration Act of 1965. Recreation rooms at 1520 Sedgwick where Kool Herc deejayed and Bronx River Houses where Afrika Bambaataa held court as well as many local parks and early venues like the Black Door, where Grandmaster Flash rocked, mark the cradle of Hip Hop.
“Bring Out the Sound System: The West Indian Influence on Hip Hop” presented by City Lore and The Point CDC, will take place on Saturday, February 28th, 2009 from 3 to 6 pm at The Point CDC, at 940 Garrison Avenue in the Bronx NY 10474
Dr. Natasha Lightfoot of the Bronx African-American Oral History Project, will lead a discussion featuring Hip Hop pioneers and legends including Kool DJ Herc, Kool DJ Red Alert (98.7 Kiss FM), Ralph McDaniels (Video Music Box) and VP Records co-founder, Patricia Chin. VP Records (named after founders Patricia and Vincent) was founded 50 years ago as a record store in Kingston called Randy’s Record Mart, and went on to record many of the DJ and Reggae legends in Jamaica. Carter Van Pelt of Wax Poetics will interview Patricia Chin about the history of VP Records.
The discussion will be followed by a presentation on Jamaican and Hip Hop sound systems from the 1970s by DJ Kool Herc and Brother Vincent. The evening concludes with a reception, where audience members can view: From Mambo to Hip Hop: The Exhibit, a photo exhibit which complements City Lore’s award-winning documentary directed by Henry Chalfant, From Mambo to Hip Hop: A South Bronx Tale; dance to the music of DJ Just Ice; and purchase West Indian fare provided by Bascom Catering with delicious roti, jerk and curry chicken, and salt fish.

One of our favorite DJ's around stopped by for a quick interview, DJ Mike Rizzy from the VA.. Virginia Beach to be exact. He's reppin' Kuya Tribe Productions which is his DJ crew from NY to VA, and Better Beat Bureau (Disko Dave!). Being a big fan of music his whole life and DJing since 1997, he's a perfect guest for Getdownnn. Welcome inside the mind of Mike Rizzy.
-I've been considering making beats myself for sometime now. For a bedroom head like myself, who's on a budget, what do you recommend using to start making beats? For anyone who's interested in making beats, I would suggest downloading Fruity Loops and going from there. Other programs like Reason you can't use without a midi controller but with Fruity Loops all you need is your computer and you can make beats. I wouldn't waste money on an MPC or a keyboard right away. Once you get familiar with the process and feel like it's something you want to pursue, then from there you can decide if you want to invest in more equipment. It's really all about your ear for music. Everyone knows 9th Wonder mainly uses Fruity Loops and he makes great music. -When making beats are you strictly a PC guy or do you have the hardware, like an Akai? Or both? I started out making beats on Fruity Loops. Then I got an MPC and that's where I made a lot of beats like "Contagious" and all that. I still use both but I mostly make beats on the computer with Reason 4 and trying to keep it that way. I love the MPC but I'm a sample based producer and chopping samples and editing is really a lot faster on computers. Also its much easier to keep track of all your beats and store them on your hard drive. With the MPC I was saving beats on compact flash cards which can be a pain. Also most of the production software has tons of emulated keyboards and effects modules so you really don't need other equipment. But the best part about it is with my laptop I can literally make beats anywhere even in the jungle if I wanted to and that's a great advantage.
-Who are your musical influences? Nas is easily my favorite MC. Lyrically with his catalog, I don't think anyone really comes close. But with the beats I can go on forever. J Dilla of course who I think is the greatest of all time, DJ Premier, Pete Rock, RZA, Diamond D, DJ Quik, Ski, 9th Wonder, Buckwild, Kev Brown, Jazzy Jeff, Kanye, Illmind, Erick Sermon, Organized Noize, Bomb Squad, 88-Keys, Q-Tip, Prince Paul, Madlib, Swiff-D, .. you get the picture.
-What? No love for Timbaland or the Neptunes from a guy from the VA? Top 5 albums? Wow that's really tough but I would have to say my 5 favorite albums are: Illmatic - Nas The Main Ingredient - Pete Rock & CL Smooth Only Built 4 Cuban Linx - Raekwon Voodoo - D'Angelo Life After Death - Notorious BIG
-As a DJ, do you prefer records or mp3s? I love my records more than anything but nowadays I'm strictly digital when I do live shows. I tell everybody I've paid my dues carrying 10 crates to clubs every night. For live shows I don't even use turntables anymore. I use the new Vestax Midi Controller but you can still do everything you do on turntables so there's really no difference.
-What do you think of mixtapes like 50 Cent's or the kind where dude's just be rhyming over other's beats? Well I came from the era when mixtapes were selling almost as much as albums with DJ Clue, Ron G, and all them. Dirty Harry is probably my favorite mixtape DJ. So I liked 50's early mixtapes but the difference with him is that he would actually create songs and they were good on those mixtapes as opposed to now when anybody just rhymes over everybody's beats. 50's songwriting ability and his humour are what I think made him big with the mixtapes and to what he is right now. People just like to hate on him but you can't deny his talent. You can tell he's a real fan of hip hop.
-Yeah I definitely think 50 has his own style of rhyming, a good ear for beats and a wack reality show. How often do you dig for records? Every possible chance I can!! There's no better way for me to spend my time. I used to live in Richmond VA which is about 2 hours from Virginia Beach and I would literally dig every day I can and still do. I'm actually taking a trip up there this weekend just to dig. Plus I'm trying to make more time to make beats so you'll be able to find me at the record shops. There's not that many places in Virginia Beach besides your usual thrift stores but they usually have the same records.
-Any record spots I should check out in your area? Uhhhh. No comment. Haha
-Cold-blooded! No LA, Vegas or HI spots for you. I wish I could dig like I used to, it seems like vinyl spots are dying left and right. People keep diggin! At the same time, a new generation of people were introduced to DJing in the late 90's through the whole turntablism movement, but now it seems to have died. What are your thoughts on turntablism? I'll always be a fan of turntablism. I mean Q-Bert, the things he does just doesn't seem human at times. But with hip-hop it'll always be a fad to some and the people who really love and live it will continue to do it. Which is kind of like the hip-hop scene nowadays. The sound on the radio is all 808's but the real fans, like your crew here at Getdownnn, will continue to only push music with substance.
-Thanks for the love! I don't know about banner holding it down though, homeboy has been bumpin' Twilight: The Score for days (see sidebar). It took me like a decade to get the flare scratch down. What was harder for you to master, the flare or the crab scratch? I think the crab is a lot easier than a flare scratch. I can only really do a one-click flare and it's not even as clean as it should be. Other DJ's in my crew are more battle tested than I am. Shout out DJ Delinger and Disko Dave. Check them out they're nice on the cuts.
- Word, represent your crew. Speaking of which, how are y'all connected to the 5th Platoon Crew? My DJ crew Kuya Tribe was actually inspired by DJ Kuya D. He lives here in VA but started out rockin parties and all that in NY in the early 90's. Kuya D would rock all these parties with DJ Roli Rho of 5th Platoon before 5th Platoon even existed. So Roli's pretty much our connection with 5th Platoon. We still keep up with Roli whenever he's in VA or if we're in NY. He's family.
-Taking from Inside the Actors Studio, what is your favorite sound or noise? Least favorite? Why? Classic drum breaks are probably my favorite sounds. I mean that's what created hip-hop to what it is. Least favorite? Probably that auto-tune effect.
-No love for auto-tune continues. Drum breaks for days. You know what to do with those, I like your production (like on "Contagious"), any chance of hooking up some more rhymes or singing over them, (like "Air Supply")?
Production is definitely where my focus is going to be for the future. That's really what I really want to do and at the same time still DJ and do gigs. Like I said I'm trying to be like Premier and Jazzy Jeff and do it all.
-What's next for Mike Rizzy? I'm probably going to hide out for the next year or so and focus on making beats seriously. But I'll definitely continue to make mixes for the people as long as they wanna hear it so yeah check them out at mikerizzy.com. Also I'm going to be focusing on getting out of VA and doing more shows out of town so promoters get at me @ deejaymikerizzy@gmail.com. Plus if you don't know the famous YouTube Blogger HappySlip is a good friend of mine so you'll be hearing some of my beats in her videos in the future.
-Word. Keep them mixes comin'! Any last words or advice to anyone who wants to be a DJ/up & coming beatsmith? If you really want to be a DJ do it for the love of music and do your history. Don't just play what's on the radio and create your own style.
-Thanks again. Make sure to check Rizzy's latest mix, Soul Control, at deejaymikerizzy.podbean.com it's smooth like butter.

… or clone myself everything would be a lot easier. I can’t do either though, so I’m either going to make it through the next two weeks, or I’m going to die. However, in my preparations for Disco 2000, I found a long lost gem and that has given me renewed energy.
Back when Alan Braxe and Thomas Bangalter’s collaboration Stardust released “Music Sounds Better With You” was THE MOST EPIC SONG EVER on dance floors in 1998. Few thought it could really be improved upon. Yet, before the word mash-up was ever coined or blogs released 3,436 un-official remixes, there was always the “white label” to turn to when official remixes didn’t quite offer what you wanted.
White label’s were named appropriately because of their often plain white label and white sleeve. Sometimes they were the test pressings done in advance of an official pressing of a vinyl record. They were also often illegal bootlegs… unofficial remixes released in small batches by producers to record stores or radio stations. Rumors would abound of who did a white label. They were often the secret weapon that every DJ kept in their crates.
Some of my favorite songs of all times are white labels, but that’s another topic. Back to Stardust!
So… shortly after “Music Sounds Better With You” came out, a white label appeared that featured a remix of the song that added the vocals from Madonna’s Holiday. It was pure magic. It was one of those combinations that forever ruined both originals. I could no longer listen to one or the other without feeling like something was missing.
Tomorrow night I’ll be running three versions of the song. First, an edit of the original Chaka Khan that Stardust sampled, the white label, and then a new electro remake of the song. It should work out really nicely.

Long Weekend Mix) - maxcar Intro Parage - Justus Köhncke [Kompakt] Veronica’s Veil (Erol Alkan Extended Rework) – Fan Death [Phantasy Sound] Of Moon, Birds and Monsters (Holy Ghost Remix) – MGMT [Columbia] Walter Neff – Matias Aguayo [Kompakt] I’m In Love With A German Film Star (Mark Reed’s Stuck In The 80s Mix) – Pet Shop Boys presents Sam Taylor Wood [Kompakt] Breakfast In Heaven (Diskjokke Remix) – Lindstrøm [Feedelity] Personal Angst – In Flagranti [Eskimo Records] William’s Blood (Aeroplane Dub – Personal Angry Maxcar Short Edit) – Grace Jones [white label] Opera Soap – Üstmamò [Virgin] Goblin Think 1 – Margot [Margot Recods] Minimal (Dj Koze Remix) – Matias Aguayo [Kompakt] Leash Called Love (12 Inches Remix) – Sugarcubes [Elektra] Superyou (Justus Köhncke Remix) – International Pony [Columbia] Endorphinmachine – Erobique [Mirau] Hello Tomorrow – Moody(man) [KDJ] Settimana Corta (means Long Weekend Mix) - maxcar

Nosaj Thing (Jason Chung) is an electronic artist/producer from Los Angeles. He's remixed Radiohead, Daedelus and a few others, gotten mad love from XLR8R and The Fader, won remix contests and beat battles, and shared the stage with the likes of Z-Trip and DJ Krush. I just stumbled across this very smooth track of his called "Aquarium," the perfect tune for a dreamy underwater adventure, found on this EP from 2006. The video is here.Different Kitchen - 2008-11-14 16:06:14

WFMU`s Beware of the Blog - 2008-11-10 17:13:35
I m so lucky I even have a job. I know that. Yet it's kind of ruined me, or at least it's ruined my appreciation of the Boston Terrier, the finest of dogs.
I work at a fancy-shmancy dog magazine, and now when I see a Boston Terrier on the street--as I did this morning--I don't think, "Ooooh, how cute!" Instead, I think, "Legs too long, not square at all, roachy topline, and the damned thing has a hackney gait!"
I've always thought that the more you learn about any topic, the more interesting it becomes. But now I think maybe there comes a point of diminishing returns, the point where you really do know too much.
CONTEST RESULTS: I WIN.
As for the contest I had going with DJ Kelly as to which of us would be the first to hear Christmas music in a store (see my previous blog post), today, Monday, Nov. 10, at approximately 12:40 PM, I was in the 10th floor Men's Dept. at Lord & Taylor buying shirts with Mr. Sluggo because Lord & Taylor is so desperate for customers that they practically follow you around and force you to take stuff for free, and while we were there a very jazzy version of "Here Comes Santa Claus" came on the Muzak. (All the big Christmas decorations are up on the main floor, and the Christmas windows are to be unveiled this Thursday, which is 2 weeks before Thanksgiving.)
I emailed DJ Kelly when I got back to my office--at my job, the one that's ruined Boston Terriers for me--and I wrote, "DO I WIN? Or are you gonna tell me you heard some Xmas music a couple days ago and forgot to write to me about it?" She wrote back and graciously conceded, as follows: "SHOOT!!!! You WIN! I've been singing Christmas music in my head in anticipation, but I haven't actually heard any yet. What are the losers who run Marshall's and TJ Maxx thinking, for Christ's sake!!! Buy, Buy,
Buy!!! That's all that matters."
Of course the overall winner, if this contest were open to anybody else, would be Blog Reader EH, who claims to have heard Christmas music in a Home Depot somewhere on Halloween night. I do not know if this caused Blog Reader EH to buy big, unnecessary pieces of plywood, however.
Thanks for reading my blogpost this time, and may God bless my Aunt Gina, who has died.

Motel de Moka - 2008-10-13 19:42:09

A mid-autumn patina of subterranean party sweat.
“May I have a pail of water on my head too?”
“Your head’s as wet as it can get” Catherine said.
“I just wanted to feel it” the girl said.
“Wade out, David, and get a good cold one,” Catherine said. And after he had poured the clear cool sea water on Marita’s head they left her lying with her face on her arms and swam out to sea. They floated easily like sea animals and Catherine said, “Wouldn’t it be wonderful if I wasn’t crazy?”
“You’re not crazy.”
“Not this afternoon,” she said, “Anyway not so far.”

IT`S THE MONEY SHOT!! - 2008-10-09 14:25:17
dl: T-PAIN f/ E-40, SOULJA BOY, SHAWTY LO, YOUNG JEEZY, RICK ROSS, LIL WAYNE, & T-WAYNE - Like I Outta (Z)"This all I want you to do with me. Put your drink down, pick it back up, drink it, put it back down, pick it up again, drink it some more, put it down on the bar, slide it across the bar, tell someone to pass you your drink back, pick it up again, put it in my mouth, I'ma take a sip of it, put it back down, I want you to pick it back up, then you take a sip of it, and then both of us drunk as fuck and the person that you slid it to the first time"--- T-Pain's equation for getting drunk, as explained on "Don't Stop The Party"A line from T-Pain's rap on Ciara's new single "Go Girl" sums up my love for him-- "Even with an IQ of 42, they say I'm a motha, motha genius." I don't care if T-Pain isn't the most intelligent musician out there. I don't care if he's indirectly making America a little dumber. He's a genius in a way that most people don't understand. Just take a listen to "Like I Outta". If you listen closely (okay, you don't have to listen that closely), you'll notice that none of the featured rappers are actually on the track. Given that he could have easily convinced half of them to hop on the track, it seems odd, no? WRONG. Take a listen to the chorus "Grab your microphone, set your autotune, and I'ma bust a verse on your ass like I outta do". This is clearly a commentary on other musicians biting off of his autotune style, so he's stolen the style and (in some cases) voice of rappers to demonstrate his point. Okay, it's not necessarily genius. But it's totally fucking brilliant, and I don't get why more people aren't talking about this track.

Going out to my mate Paula's who's bday it was yesterday (sorry for being a day late P.).
Always one who appreciates new music and moreso now that she is driving. Happy bday P.
This song is one that is just perfect driving music to me. With heavy, solid beats, sweeping melodies and lyrics to make you look around in wonder this is from 2000 but delivers timeless sounds.
The album is Ape Sounds, the work of Nigo (Bathing Ape fame) along with some heavy musical hitters.
From Amazon's editorial review (Tony Marcus):
"Ape Sounds is the debut LP from Japan's Nigo, best known for his clothing label Bathing Ape--a cult product dripping with Planet of the Apes
motifs and celebrated status as a hyper-cool brand. Not a regular
musician, Nigo performs an art director's role (although he also plays
drums) on the album--guiding a creative team of (James) Lavelle, DJ Kudo, Money
Mark (ed note: featured on cubikmusik here)
, Ben Lee, Cornelius, and Takagi Ken (Major Force). The result is
(at times) a self-consciously cool mix of punk, trip-hop and knowing
adult pop. Some of it's fun--"Kung Fu Fighting" combines laconic
Japanese rap with a neatly orchestrated remake of a Bruce Lee
soundtrack. Ben Lee's contribution, "Free Diving," is breathlessly
fantastic--a wry and urbane vocal walking smoothly over an explosive,
pop-rock thrashout. Also good is "The Very Urgent Dub," in which Money
Mark brings sass to a Pablo and Maurizio-referencing stoner anthem.
Some cuts feel vague but whatever Nigo lacks in expression he more than
compensates for with style."

Mango of one of the best works launched by Sascha Funke. His album with the same name was released last February on Bpitch Control and now it was time to do some remixes of this great success! This fantastic label doesn't know how to let us down and, to maintain the high level of the original music they invited three producers that have a doubtless reputation!Mewzick - 2008-08-10 21:29:25

London-based electro-pop purveyors and shiny dance floor nerd funk hipsters Hot Chip are about to drop their new album. Made In the Dark will be released by Astralwerks / DFA in the U.S. on February 5th, and on February 4th by EMI in the U.K. The new album follows hot on the heels of Hot Chip's DJ Kicks mixtape release for the K7 series over the summer -- not to mention about a gazillion remix projects over the past year featuring everyone from Kraftwerk to Tracey Thorn, !!! to CSS, and Omaha's Tilly and the Wall to the Elysian String Quartet's performance of Prokofiev's "String Quartet No. 2" (!)
Made in the Dark is, of course, ready for the dance floor. The album's first single, "Shake a Fist," was released last year, and the second single, "Ready for the Floor," will be released on January 28th as an enhanced CD single with the video (see below), a SoulWax remix, and a Diplo remix of "Shake a Fist. " "Ready for the Floor" is driven by a fantastic, elastic-bounce bass line. In addition to drawing off early-80s electro-pop (think Soft Cell and OMD crossed with the Buggles), the track features a chorus that sounds like something Jeff Lynne would've written for an ELO pop song. Check the video, which features Alexis Taylor as a two-faced combination of Batman villains the Joker and Two Face playing around in Thomas Dolby's lab (with lots of technicolor and cans of paint):los amigos de durutti - 2007-12-10 21:04:50
Swift educated himself with the classic turntable beats of the early '80s New York playground pioneers while listening to funk and jazz at home. "My dad was a salsa and meringue DJ," Rob says. "My brother learned how to scratch and do all the hip hop deejaying stuff on my dad's equipment (without his permission) and I'd sit there and watch him. My older brother exposed me to all that," Swift notes. "All the stuff I create as a DJ is rooted in the songs that I heard from Bob James, Herbie Hancock and James Brown to Quincy Jones and old DJs like Grandmaster Flash and Grandwizard Theodore. That's where my roots are."

Hailing from Ottawa Canada - working in jungle and drum & bass breakbeat music, DJ K has been spinning since 1999. His enthusiasm and unique high-energy enjoyable sets led to early residencies in his hometown which saw a rise to fame where he began playing out of town regularly and signed a sponsorship deal with local clothing company, norml. In 2001, Championz was released on N2O records in L.A., which broke out as a landmark anthem unlike anything else at the time.
